A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF EFFECTS OF SODIUM NHEXYLETHYL BARBITURATE (ORTAL SODIUM) AND OF SODIUM ISOAMYLETHYLBARBITURATE (SODIUM AMYTAL) UPON EXCISED SMOOTH MUSCLE

1. In carefully controlled experiments on strips of excised intestine and uterus sodium amytal and ortal sodium decrease the general tonus and the amplitude of the rhythmic contractions in all concentrations.

2. Ortal sodium and sodium amytal when added to Locke's solution increase its pH and consequently may through their alkalinity cause an increase in the general tonus and in the force of the rhythmic contractions of excised smooth muscle.

3. Ortal sodium is far more active in depressing excised smooth muscle than is sodium amytal.

4. Uterine muscle requires a higher concentration of either drug to produce an effect than do the other tissues.
