Remarkable constancy is found in the systolic blood pressure of dogs in standard conditions. Daily arterial puncture on dogs over long periods (two months) is apparently without serious ill effect. Ephedrine produces a disturbance of nitrogen metabolism, probably by diminishing the assimilation of protein. A transient diuresis is always observed. Glycosuria usually persists after withdrawal. Tolerance to the pressor action of ephedrine is manifested. Ephedrine administration in doses that maintain a continuous hypertension may be continued for 2 weeks without other effects; the blood pressure and protein absorption return to normal within a few days of withdrawal.
