STUDIES OF MORPHINE, CODEINE AND THEIR DERIVATIVES VIII. MONOACETYL- AND DIACETYLMORPHINE AND THEIR HYDROGENATED DERIVATIVES

NATHAN B. EDDY 1 and HOMER A. HOWES 1

1 From the Laboratory of Pharmacology, University of Michigan Medical School, Ann Arbor, Michigan

1. Acetylation, like methylation, of the alcoholic hydroxyl of morphine increases analgesic and some other effects.

2. Hydrogenation of both monoacetyl- and diacetylmorphine reduces analgesic, depressant and intestinal effects. It does not also decrease toxicity.

3. A new and simple method of measuring central depression is described.
