THE QUANTITATIVE ACTION OF ACETYLCHOLINE AND HISTAMINE ON THE GUINEA PIG UTERUS

MARGARET DOROTHY WEBSTER 1

1 From the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, Duke University School of Medicine, Durham, North Carolina

1. The quantitative relations for the action of acetylcholine and histamine on the guinea pig uterus are described.

2. The height of contraction of the uterus varies with the concentration of acetylcholine used. When the logarithm of the height of contraction is plotted against the logarithm of the acetylcholine concentration, a straight line is obtained.

3. Varying the concentration of histamine does not affect the height of contraction but the latent period is a function of the histamine concentration. When the logarithm of the latent period is plotted against the logarithm of the histamine concentration, a straight line is obtained.
