THE EFFECT OF DIFFERENT CONCENTRATIONS OF ACETYLCHOLINE AND HISTAMIN ON THE RATE OF CONTRACTION OF THE LONGITUDINAL MUSCLES OF THE GUINEA PIG ILEUM

FREDERICK BERNHEIM 1 and ABNER GORFAIN 1

1 From the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, Duke University Medical School, Durham, North Carolina

1. A method is described for measuring the rate of contraction of the longitudinal muscles of the intestine.

2. The rate of contraction of the guinea pig ileum with different concentrations of histamin and acetylcholine has been measured. Plotting the log 1/contraction time against the log molar concentration, a slightly concave line is obtained in both cases, the slope being less for histamin than for acetylcholine.

3. The slope of the curves obtained for acetylcholine on the ileum of the rabbit, rat and mouse, is the same as that obtained on the ileum of the guinea pig.

4. In all cases, cocaine, nicotine and epinephrine, slow the contraction rate of the ileum. In the guinea pig their action is more marked when histamin is used than when acetylcholine is used.
