INVESTIGATION INTO THE ACTION OF ST. JOHNS WORT

1. A method for the extraction of the fluorescent red pigment present in St. Johns Wort is described.

2. Effects of the injection into animals of the extracts prepared as above are described.

3. Symptoms observed were similar to those caused by ingestion of St. Johns Wort.

4. The presence of impurities increases the sensitising properties of this pigment.

5. The young plants contain less pigment than older plants.

6. The spectrum of the alcoholic extract of young plants is different from that of the old plants.
