THE ACTIONS OF PITUITARY PREPARATIONS (POSTERIOR LOBE) UPON THE INTESTINES OF THE RABBIT

K. I. MELVILLE 1 and R. L. STEHLE 1

1 Department of Pharmacology, McGill University, Montreal

The actions of oxytocic and pressor fractions obtained from posterior lobes of the pituitary gland by a method different from that described by Kamm, Aldrich, Grote, Rowe and Bugbee for the preparation of pitocin and pitressin, upon the isolated intestine and the intestine in situ of the rabbit are identical with the actions of pitocin and pitressin.

Since the method of preparing the new substance is different from that described by Kamm, Aldrich, Grote, Rowe and Bugbee for the preparation of pitocin and pitressin, it may be concluded that the experiments support the idea that the actions of pituitary extract upon the intestines of the rabbit are due to the pressor substance and not to a possible third constituent.
