PIPERIDINOPROPANEDIOL DI-PHENYLURETHANE HYDROCHLORIDE, A NEW LOCAL ANESTHETIC

Diothane, the hydrochloride of piperidinopropanediol diphenylurethane, is a new local anesthetic which promises to be of great value. Its maximum toxicity as tested by rapid intravenous injection is three times that of novocaine, although it is less toxic than novocaine upon subcutaneous injection. The anesthetic activity on mucous membrane surfaces is more than double that of cocaine. When injected diothane is about three times as active as novocaine. Anesthesia with diothane is followed by a period of post-operative analgesia which appears to be unique to this compound among the local anesthetics which are available. Diothane solutions are non-irritating, stable and boilable. Clinical results bear out the pharmacological findings and will be reported elsewhere.
