CHRONIC NICOTINISM IN YOUNG RATS AND RABBITS EFFECT ON GROWTH AND ESTRUS

ALLEN BEHREND 1 and C. H. THIENES 1

1 Department of Pharmacology, University of Southern California, Los Angeles

1. Subcutaneous injections of nicotine slightly retarded the weight curve of growing male rats.

2. The retarding effect was associated with a decreased deposit of intra-abdominal fat.

3. The average weight of growing female rats injected with nicotine was slightly below that of the controls, but the difference was probably of no statistical significance. However, the effect of nicotine upon the fat deposits of female rats was definite.

4. Nicotine injections did not alter the skeletal growth of rats of either sex.

5. There was no effect of nicotine upon food consumption of rats.

6. Subcutaneous injections of nicotine had a negligible effect on the weight curve of growing rabbits.
