STUDIES OF MORPHINE, CODEINE AND THEIR DERIVATIVES I. GENERAL METHODS

NATHAN B. EDDY 1

1 From the Laboratory of Pharmacology, University of Michigan Medical School, Ann Arbor, Michigan

Methods of comparison of morphine and derivatives have been described. These methods cover toxicity and convulsant action in mice and rabbits, analgesic and emetic action in cats, and heart rate, body temperature, respiratory effect, general depression, and constipating action in rabbits. The methods are illustrated by the results obtained with morphine hydrochloride. Data is presented to indicate the minimal effective dosage of morphine for each of the effects described.
