THE RELATIVE ACTIVITY OF ERGOTOXINE AND ERGOTAMINE

E. LOZINSKI 1, G. W. HOLDEN 1, and G. R. DIVER 1

1 From The Research Laboratories, Charles E. Frosst and Company, Montreal, Canada

1. An alkaloidal tartrate, corresponding to ergotoxine di-tartrate, has been prepared from Spanish ergot.

2. The biological activity and colour reaction of this compound in relation to ergotoxine ethanesulphonate, ergotamine methanesulphonate and ergotamine tartrate have been studied.

3. It has been shown that ergotoxine is biologically more active than ergotamine, and the quantitative relation has been indicated.

4. It has been shown that ergotamine is more active colourimetrically and less active biologically than ergotoxine.
