THE ACTION OF DRUGS ON THE OXYGEN CONSUMPTION OF THE FROG'S ISOLATED AURICLE

1. A method is described for introducing drugs into an isolated auricle without disturbing the measurements of the oxygen consumption.

2. The action of three drugs on the oxygen consumption of the frog's isolated auricle was measured.

3. a. Adrenaline causes a percentage increase in oxygen consumption slightly greater than the percentage increase in frequency of beat.

b. Strophanthin causes a decrease in both oxygen consumption and in frequency of beat; sub-lethal concentrations cause a temporary initial increase in oxygen consumption.

c. Pilocarpine causes a percentage decrease in oxygen consumption that is greater than the percentage decrease in frequency of beat.
