CONCERNING THE POINT OF ATTACK OF PITUITARY EXTRACT AND HISTAMINE ON SMOOTH MUSCLE

DAVID I. MACHT 1

1 From the Pharmacological Laboratory, Johns Hopkins University and the Brady Urological Institute, Baltimore

The above experiments indicate clearly two conclusions. In the first place both pituitary extracts and histamine act directly upon muscle substance without the intermediary of a nervous mechanism. In the second place, the highly potent body A derived by Professor Abel from the pituitary gland also acts directly upon muscle substance but is much more powerful, as little as 1:5,000,000 of it giving a maximal response. This would tend to give additional evidence to that already adduced by Abel and his collaborators in regard to the nature of the pituitary principle.
