Variations in the phenoltetrachlorphthalein test can first be detected following the removal of approximately 12 per cent of the total liver substance in rabbits; when amounts greater than this are removed the degree of functional impairment bears a close and constant relation to the quantity of liver tissue removed. The curves of disappearance of the dye from the blood stream of rabbits have been standardized so that abnormal results in these animals can be interpreted in terms of actual percentage of impaired function.
