Eight steroids and stilbestrol were examined for their influences on hepato-biiary excretion of sulfobromophthalein. Three patterns of response were observed. 1) Cortisone transiently increased bile flow and reduced concentration and rate of excretion of sulfobromophthalein in the bile. 2) Norethandrolone, norethynodrel and Norlutin reduced rates of bile formation and of sulfobromophthalein excretion without affecting the concentrating mechanism for sulfobromophthalein. 3) Testosterone and methyltestosterone, estradiol, progesterone and stilbestrol irreversibly reduced the rate of bile formation and transiently reduced excretion and concentration of sulfobromophthalein.
