-PHENYLPROPYL-N-BENZYLOXY ACETA- MIDE (W-1372) ON EXPERIMENTAL ATHEROSCLEROSIS AND HYPERCHOLESTEREMIA
1 Wallace Laboratories, Cranbury, New Jersey
W-1372 (N-
-phenylpropyl-N- benzyloxy acetamide) affected the lipid metabolism in several species in which it was evaluated. The drug lowered blood cholesterol, phospholipids and triglycerides in squirrel monkeys on a normal and hypercholesteremic diet and in Cebus monkeys on a normal diet. In rats and rabbits on a normal diet, serum cholesterol was not lowered, but there was a marked hypocholesteremic action in these species when blood cholesterol levels were elevated by high-fat or high-cholesterol diets. In squirrel monkeys and rabbits the drug reduced the extent of fatty deposits in the aorta. The drug increased transaminase levels in rabbits and in squirrel monkeys but not in Cebus monkeys. It caused liver enlargement in rats and squirrel monkeys but not in rabbits.
