THE EFFECT OF beta-PYRIDYL CARBINOL ON PLASMA FREE FATTY ACIDS IN THE SHEEP

E. R. NYE 1 and PATRICIA A. McCAW 1

1 Department of Medicine, University of Otago Medical School, Dunedin, New Zealand

The i.v. injection of 500 mg of beta-pyridyl carbinol in sheep produced an acute fall of arterial plasma free fatty acids, free fatty acid total turnover and glycerol levels within 30 to 60 min of injection. After the depression of plasma free fatty acids and glycerol, there was a rise above base-line levels 90 to 120 min after the injection. The findings are interpreted as showing depression of lipolysis in adipose tissue followed by stimulation of lipolysis in the rebound phase. The observations are compared with the similar effect produced by nicotinic acid.
