LIVER GROWTH ASSOCIATED WITH THE INDUCTION OF AMINOPYRINE DEMETHYLASE ACTIVITY AFTER PHENOBARBITAL TREATMENT IN ADULT MALE RATS

THOMAS S. ARGYRIS 1

1 Department of Zoology, Syracuse University, Syracuse, New York

Five daily injections of 100 mg/kg b.wt. of phenobarbital into young adult male rats results in a marked increase in the arninopyrine demethylase activity. Associated with the increase in aminopyrine demethylase is a marked increase in liver weight and total protein. There is also an increase in the total deoxyribonucleic acid and ribonucleic acid, but not in the nuclear count. The hepatocyte mitotic activity is greatly increased during the first 4 days of phenobarbital injection.
