OCCURRENCE AND PHARMACOLOGIC PROPERTIES OF A LIPID SUBSTANCE OBTAINED FROM RABBIT KIDNEY

Donald C. Dyer 1 and Edward J. Walaszek 1

1 Department of Pharmacology, University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, Kansas

The extraction and purification of a pharmacologically active lipid from the rabbit kidney is described. The extraction into ether is pH-dependent, indicating its acidic nature. The lipid is a phospholipid in that it contains phosphorus and is inactivated by phospholipase C. The biologic activity is lost by halogenation of the lipid. The lipid has no effect on blood pressure although it stimulates smooth muscle. The medulla possesses approximately 10 times the amount when compared with the cortex on a wet weight basis.
