THE CARDIOPULMONARY EFFECTS OF QUINIDINE AND PROCAINAMIDE

Luis E. Folle 1 and Domingo M. Aviado 1

1 Department of Pharmacology, School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

In the anesthetized dog, the intravenous injection of quinidine consistently induces a fall in systemic blood pressure hut a biphasic rise and fall in pulmonary arterial pressure. The femoral and pulmonary blood vessels are dilated but the heart is initially stimulated and depressed. All these effects are manifestations of local actions of quinidine on the heart and blood vessels, except the cardiac stimulation. Like quinidine, procainamide dilates the pulmonary and femoral blood vessels and depresses the heart. Unlike quinidine, procainamide induces a pure fall in pulmonary arterial pressure.
