The absorption, distribution and metabolism of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) have been studied in several animal species using S35-tagged material. Absorption is rapid and complete in the rat and rabbit when administered either orally or dermally. Radioactivity is found in relatively equal concentrations in all tissues soon after dosing, including the ocular tissues. The rat excretes a major part of the dose in the urine within 24 hr, partly as dimethylsulfone, but chiefly as unchanged DMSO. Excretion of label in the rabbit is more prolonged. Metabolism to the sulfone was also demonstrated in the rabbit and guinea pig.
