Lipids extracted from the microsomal and mitochondrial fractions of rabbit, guinea pig, toad and fish hearts facilitated the transport of calcium ions from Ringer's solution into a lipid solvent phase (chloroform). The beta adrenergic receptor blocking drugs, pronethalol and propranolol, inhibited this lipid-facilitated transport; epinephrine and norepinephrine potentiated it, and tyramine had no apparent effect. These findings are discussed in relation to the hypothesis that the antiarrhythmic action of certain drugs may reflect their ability to inhibit such lipid-facilitated transport of calcium from an aqueous to a lipid solvent phase.
