Superesensitivity of the cat nictitating membrane produced by chronicpretreatment with reserpine, decentralization or denervation was investigated to determine possible stereospecificity between D(-)- and L(+)-norepinephrine. Nictitating membrane contractions of spinal cats in response to isomers (intravenously injected) were magnified and recorded on a drum with an isotonic lever system. The degree of sensitization was determined by measuring horizontal shifts of dose-response curves for sensitized preparations to the left of their controls at the ED20 mm level. Supersensitivity caused by chronic pretreatment with reserpine or denervation is stereospecific for D(-)-as against L(+)- norepinephrine. However, after acute pretreatment of the preparations with reserpine, decentralization but not denervation supersensitivity is stereospccific in the same manner.
