Allopurinol, an inhibitor of xanthine oxidase, can markedly inhibit uric acid production in the developing chick embryo, the growing chick and in adult chickens at doses which produce little toxicity. The diversion of nitrogen from the usual end-product, uric acid, to a different nitrogenous end product, continued over a period of several days, is consistent in the chick embryo and chick, with normal development and growth.
