INCREASED SENSITIVITY TO PENTYLENETETRAZOL AND FLUROTHYL FOLLOWING CORTICAL ABLATIONS IN RATS

Martin W. Adler 1

1 Department of Pharmacology, Temple University School of Medicine, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Rats with bilateral ablations of either the frontal or posterior cortex showed an increased sensitivity to the convulsant effects of pentylenetetrazol and fiurothyl (hexafluorodiethyl ether) when the animals were tested about 4 months postoperatively. The magnitude of the increased sensitivity to both drugs was approximately the same with both types of ablation. Flurothyl possesses many advantages over pentylenetetrazol as a test agent in animals with brain damage.
