Amphetamine sulfate produces neuromuscular block in the rat phrenic nerve-diaphragm preparation at concentrations below those found in the mucles of rats dying from this substance. This block is enhanced by increase in temperature and the addition of lactate. Neuromuscular block may be a cause of death from amphetamine poisoning in experimental animals.
Other sympathomimetic amines also cause neuromuscular block in vitro. The blocking concentration of different compounds varies widely within the series of drugs tested.
