EFFECTS OF THYROIDECTOMY AND THYROXINE ON THE RENAL UPTAKE OF PAH AND TEA

Carmelo G. Nepomuceno 1 and J. Maxwell Little 1

1 Department of Pharmacology, The Bowman Gray School of Medicine of Wake Forest College, Winston-Salem, North Carolina

Thyroidectomy depresses the PAH transport system but has no effect on the TEA transport mechanism in rat renal cortex slices. Prolonged thyroxine administration to normal rats in small doses causes depression of the two pathways, the depression of TEA transport occurring immediately and progressively increasing while the depression of PAH uptake begins after a lapse of 2 weeks.
