A method, using the hindlimb reflexes of chronic spinal dogs for determining the relative potency of morphine, codeine and I-K-1, which is reproducible and sensitive has been described. Since the actions of the drugs upon effector systems innervated by portions of the nervous system above and below the level of transection can be easily studied together, a qualitative and quantitative assessment of the drugs' actions can be made.
