Win 20,740, 2-cyclopropylmethyl-2'-hydroxy-5,9-dimethyl-6,7-benzomorphan, a compound which is a narcotic antagonist in experimental animals, has been shown to be a potent analgesic agent in man. Doses as low as 0.25 mg, given by mouth or injection, provide effective pain relief. The failure to observe serious obtundation or respiratory depression with doses four to eight times this amount suggests that Win 20,740 has a lower "ceiling" for certain untoward effects than does morphine.
