STUDIES ON THE BIOLOGICAL ACTIVITIES OF THE ALDEHYDES DERIVED FROM NOREPINEPHRINE, SEROTONIN, TRYPTAMINE AND HISTAMINE

The aldehydes corresponding to tryptamine, serotonin, epinephrine and histamine have been generated in vitro by purified oxidative deaminase preparations and isolated free of amines. The biological activities of these aldehydes have been assayed on isolated smooth muscle preparations. At concentrations several hundred times higher than the parent amines, the aldehydes were found to be totally inactive and to have no inhibitory or potentiating effect on the activity of the amines. The aldehydes were found to be taken up and metabolized by the smooth muscle preparations, showing that inactivity was not due to impermeability.
