Heat and urea denaturation of bovine serum albumin is altered in the presence of gold thiomalate. The denatured albumin formed in the presence of gold thiomalate resembles that formed in the presence of reagents which prevent the sulfhydryl disulfide interchange reaction. Gold thiomalate inhibits the reaction between ferricyanide and thiomalate. The addition of gold thiomalate to protein containing free sulfhydryl groups at room temperature does not result in the release of measurable amounts of free thiomalate.
