Studies were made on the antagonistic effect of BAS-phenol on blood pressure responses of different animal species to various indolealkylamines. In the dog, BAS-phenol selectively blocks responses to serotonin, bufotenine, 4-hydroxytryptamine, psilocin and psilocybin but not those to tryptamine or dimethyltryptamine. A similar differentiation could usually be shown in the cat and the rabbit but not in the chicken. Differentiation between serotonin and tryptamine by selective specificity of BAS-phenol antagonism could not be demonstrated in the isolated guinea-pig ileum and rabbit ear preparations.
