Chickens were depleted of tissue histamine by repeated injections of compound 48/80. Such animals were found to respond to injections of tryptamine or serotonin with a rise in arterial pressure instead of the usual fall. Bioassays for histamine done on urine samples taken after injections of serotonin, tryptamine or compound 48/80 showed significant increments in histamine content. The implication of these findings in relation to the involvement of a histamine mediated mechanism in the depressor response of the chicken to serotonin and tryptamine is discussed.
