A sensitive method of measuring monoamine oxidase in vitro based on the rate of indoleacetic acid formation from tryptamine is described. The method is particularly suited for studies on organs with low levels of enzyme activity, e.g., dog heart, or on small samples of tissue, such as a sympathetic ganglion. Correlation of the biochemical and pharmacologic effects of MAO inhibitors in such loci will thereby be facilitated.
