Mepivacaine and lidocaine have been demonstrated to be effective anticonvulsants in the standard mouse screening tests, possessing activity similar to that of diphenylhydantoin but much shorter in duration of action. These materials are also effective in blocking electrically induced cortical afterdischarge in the unanesthetized rabbit. This latter method has been investigated as a possible screening procedure and technique of bioassay of anticonvulsant materials. However, it does not appear that use of suppression of cortical afterdischarge yields any information about these drugs not obtained by anticonvulsant screening methods currently in use.
