THE EFFECT OF GAMMA-AMINOBUTYRIC ACID ON SYNAPTIC TRANSMISSION IN AUTONOMIC GANGLIA

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) has been shown to have weak depressant activity on synaptic transmission in the inferior mesenteric ganglion of the decerebrate cat.

High doses (100 µg/kg) administered intra arterially were necessary to elicit a depression.

The sensitivity of the preparations varied widely and tachyphylaxis was observed in some experiments.

No effect could be obtained in the superior cervical ganglion.
