THE EFFECT OF 5-HYDROXYTRYPTAMINE (SEROTONIN) ON RENAL HEMODYNAMICS, WATER AND ELECTROLYTE EXCRETION

The intravenous infusion in dogs of 3.0 µg/kg/min serotonin was accompanied by a significant decrease in the renal excretion rates of sodium, chloride and potassium ions. There was no significant change in GFR, RPF, urine flow or tubular loads of ions. There was a significant increase in sodium ion reabsorption. With 1.5 µg/kg/ min serotonin infusion, only sodium ion excretion was significantly decreased. These results are interpreted as indicating a specific effect of serotonin on electrolyte reabsorption by the renal tubule in the dog.
