A complex biphasic response of hypoxic aortic rings to readmission of oxygen is described. It was found that phenylephrine, 5-hydroxytryptamine, histamine, carbachol, and excess potassium ion magnify the response. Autonomic blocking agents do not prevent the effect, whereas NaCN and 2,4-dinitrophenol selectively inhibit the component phases of the response.
Reasons are outlined for believing a) that the oxygen acts directly on smooth muscle cells and b) that the components of the complex response are independent of each other.
