THE UTERINE RELAXANT PROPERTIES OF ISOXSUPRINE

P. M. Lish 1, I. W. Hillyard 1, and K. W. Dungan 1

1 Department of Pharmacology, Research Division, Mead Johnson & Company, Evansville, Indiana

Isoxsuprine inhibited human and rabbit uterine muscle in vitro and the uterus in situ in rabbits, cats and dogs in various physiologic or hormonal states. It exerted an effective and extended inhibitory influence on both the longitudinal and the circular muscle of the uterus. The uterine relaxing action of isoxsuprine was not influenced to any great degree by the hormonal status of the uterus and this activity was evident in cats and dogs in varying stages of pregnancy.

Isoxsuprine inhibits uterine muscle by a mechanism in which activation of beta adrenergic receptors appears to be the predominant event. However, an accompanying papaverine-like action, the importance of which may vary with the species, also is suggested.
