INFLUENCE OF ACETYLSALICYLIC ACID AND SALICYLAMIDE ON THE COAGULATION OF BLOOD

Armand J. Quick 1 and Lenore Clesceri 1

1 Department of Biochemistry, Marquette University School of Medicine, Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Acetylsalicylic acid when administered daily in large doses of 0.0857 g/kg of body weight causes an increase in the one-stage prothrombin time in most normal subjects. A similar dose of salicylamide has little or no effect on the prothrombin time. No effect from either drug was found on the bleeding time, the platelet count, the prothrombin consumption tests or other hemostatic tests in normal individuals.
