The effects of six monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors (JB-516, JB-835, RO-50700, harmine, harmaline and iproniazid) on the cardiovascular actions of norepinephrine, dopamine, tryptamine, tyramine and serotonin were studied in the anesthetized dog.
The actions of dopamine, tryptamine and tyramine on heart contractile force and arterial pressure were significantly augmented by all inhibitors. It is postulated that this potentiation is related to MAO inhibition.
The actions of norepinephrine were not significantly altered by the administration of the inhibitors. The effects of serotonin were decreased by all inhibitors except RO-50700.
The acute cardiovascular actions of the various inhibitors differed considerably and were apparently unrelated to the MAO-blocking property of the drugs.
