The intestinal inhibitory effect of phenylephrine in the dog is blocked by small doses of the alpha adrenergic blocking agents such as Dibozane.
The intestinal inhibitory effect of isoproterenol is blocked by small doses of its dichloro analog, DCI.
The effect of epinephrinc on the canine ileum is usually not blocked by either kind of blocking agent alone, but is blocked by a combination of the two.
It is, therefore, concluded that in terms of our concept of the adrenergic receptive mechanism the canine ileum has both alpha and beta receptors, and that both receptors subserve relaxation or inhibition.
