ANTAGONISM OF THE FREQUENCY OF PHENYLQUINONE-INDUCED WRITHING IN THE MOUSE BY WEAK ANALGESICS AND NONANALGESICS

L. C. Hendershot 1 and Janet Forsaith 1

1 The Biochemical Research Laboratory, The Dow Chemical Company, Midland, Michigan

The frequency of writhing motions in mice given phenylquinone intraperitoneally can be altered by low doses of Na acetylsalicylate and other low potency analgesic agents.

Antagonism of the frequency of writhing is afforded by a variety of agents not usually classified as analgesics.

The sensitivity of the test is greater when based on the number of writhing motions rather than on the all-or-none response.
