The effect of frequency of contraction on isometric contractility of rabbit auricular muscle has been studied over a wide range of frequencies. This frequency force relationship can be presented as a triphasic curve which has been termed the "S-shaped curve".
The action of a number of metabolic inhibitors on the isolated auricle can be modified both qualitatively and quantitatively by rate variations.
It is postulated that in cardiac muscle at least two processes influence contractility: a) energy production and b) the potentiating phenomenon elicited by high rate of stimulation. The complex actions of some inhibitors on cardiac contractility can be partially explained by differential action on these two processes.
