Plasma concentrations of adrenergic amines were determined during anesthesia with various agents. Inhalation of anesthetic concentrations of ether, chloroform or vinyl ether increased arterial plasma levels of epinephrine and norepinephrine. These increments were sustained and frequently augmented during the emergence from deeper planes into plane 1 anesthesia. During thiopental anesthesia, plasma amine concentrations were not significantly different from those during conscious controls.
During deep anesthesia, a depression of heart contractile force was observed with each of the agents studied. Contractile force frequently rose to values above normal during the emergence from anesthesia with volatile agents. This was interpreted as being due to the presence of an elevated level of catechol amines in the plasma at a time when there was a relatively minor grade of direct myocardial depression.
