1. In the rabbit, n-propyl nitrate has an approximate intravenous LD50 of 225 mgm./kgm.; the compound is of comparatively low toxicity in the cat and dog also.
2. The results of this preliminary investigation suggest that the prompt hypotension which occurs during non-fatal n-propyl nitrate intoxication may be caused, in part, by a direct action of the compound on vascular smooth muscle. Cardiac effects may contribute to the hypotension; respiratory depression may also play a part in the lethal effects.
