Jasper (see Delafresnaye et al., p 384, 1954) has reported that stimulation of portions of the meso-diencephalic reticular formation may cause cessation of cortical unit discharge and therefore suggests that the brain stem activating system may have inhibitory components as hypothesized in this paper on the basis of pharmacological evidence.
