THE ENZYMATIC CONVERSION OF CODEINE TO MORPHINE

An enzyme system in liver of a number of mammalian species which catalyzes the cleavage of codeine to yield morphine and formaldehyde is described. This enzyme system is located in the microsomes and requires reduced triphosphopyridine nucleotide and oxygen.
