The effects of 3 and 6 mgm./kgm. of aminophylline, and of 6 mgm./kgm. of aminophylline together with 150 mgm. of meperidine, upon the respiratory response to ascending concentrations of inspired and alveolar carbon dioxide were studied in normal subjects.

At an alveolar pCO2 of 46 mm. Hg, 3 and 6 mgm./kgm. of aminophylline increased respiratory minute volume 46 and 98 per cent, respectively; tidal volume was increased by both doses, respiratory rate only by the larger dose. The administration of aminophylline with meperidine counteracted most of the respiratory depressant effects of meperidine.
