A quantitative assay method for the oxytocic activity of angiotonin preparations is presented. It is based on the time interval (referred to as response time) which includes latent period and time of contraction. It was found that this time interval was inversely proportional to the dose, and that this relationship was valid over a wide range of maximal and submaximal contractions. Statistical data are given to demonstrate accuracy and validity of the bioassay. The advantages of the new assay method for "slow contracting," smooth muscle stimulating compounds are discussed.
